Teaching Materials
Our website offers a selection of teaching units that deal with Islamic majority-societies and Islamic minorities in West Europe. The units can be utilized for different grade levels and various subjects, e.g. for history, politics and social studies, German, literature, music or ethics. They have been developed as part of the Georg Eckert Institute project “1001 Ideas: Islamic Cultures and Histories.”
The teaching units each consist of background texts and audio and video sequences as well as source texts and images. Additionally, each unit includes a teacher commentary and worksheets for different school levels. Further information about the structure of the units can be found by scrolling down.
Overview
Accessing the Teaching Materials
By Theme
Links to the units can be found here as well as through the main page. There you will find 15 categories with titles like “Daily Life”, Politics” or “Religion” under which all of the teaching units can be found. Each of these category fields is highlighted with a different color. The smaller squares located along the left border have the same color code and can be clicked on to go directly to the respective category. After you click on one of the category fields, you will arrive on the page with the teaching units that correspond to the main topic.
By School Level
Our materials can also be found in order by school level (Primary School, Lower and Upper Secondary School) here.
By Multidisciplinary Theme
A compilation of units on various multidisciplinary themes (e.g. “Youth and Identity”, “Living Together”) can be found here.
Materials for Our Book
We also published some of our units in the book “Muslimische Gesellschaften in der Moderne: Ideen – Geschichten – Materialien (Islamic Societies in the Modern Age: Ideas – Histories – Materials).” Notes, as well as the didactic materials, about the book can be found here.
By Using the Search Function
Another approach to the website content is through the Search Function, where you can find all texts in which a selected keyword is used. Each search result is linked directly to the corresponding text.
How Are the Teaching Units Structured?
All of our teaching units have the same structure. By clicking on the colored squares, you will find the factual information and by clicking on the gray squares leads you to the corresponding teaching material:
Factual Information
All of the colored squares contain the factual information, in the form of texts, images and video or audio data, on the teaching unit’s topic. All texts can be downloaded for free as PDFs by clicking on the printer symbol and printed if necessary.
- The centered text (accentuated with a !) leads to an introduction
- Each of the fields grouped around this "!" examine an aspect of the topic
Teaching Materials
The gray highlighted fields lead to texts that are particularly relevant for teaching. These texts are also freely available in PDF format.
- Worksheets for the various school levels
- A didactic introduction with suggestions for classroom implementation
- Some teaching units additionally provide a glossary with all terms that are relevant to the topic and that are used in the unit texts
